Persons with Disability (PwDs) especially Girls and Women with Disabilities are disproportionately affected by lack of water and sanitation. DAF works with communities including those with disability through programs that equips them with the skills and tools to bring sustainable water solutions to tackle the health and violence risks, and lost income and educational opportunities associated with the lack of safe water and sanitation in their own communities. Through our partner One Life Global Welfare from UK, DAF aims at expanding our Disability and WASH projects through a multi-year WASH programs to transform PWDs and other vulnerable persons from passive recipients of failed water projects to WASH providers in Somalia. In Somalia, sanitation infrastructure is inadequate and many a times they are not accessible to PwDs. Disability seriously impede a person’s right to safely managed water, sanitation and hygiene in a multitude of ways. CwDs/PwDs physically unable to travel to a communal toilet and soiling themselves waiting for help. Some are forced to crawl across a make-shift, shared toilet floor or consuming less in order to avoid using facilities outside the home at unsafe hours. Some children cannot access toilets due to wheelchair which don’t fit through the school’s sanitation facilities. Some of our WASH interventions entails:
